History of Sigma Alpha Iota


          Sigma Alpha Iota was founded June12, 1903 at the University of Michigan School of Music, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The founders were seven upperclassmen and graduate students:  Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davie Sherrill, Leila Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Georgina Potts, and Mary Storrs Anderson.  Elizabeth Campbell described the founding:  "...when seven gifted young musicians solemnly stand for the highest possible musical scholarship, for nobility and uprightness of character, and for the maintenance of friendly and unselfish relations among women in the musical profession."

 

History of the Delta Zeta Chapter


            In March of 1960, The Women's Music Club was organized at Troy State College with twenty members.  This group of young women participated in such projects as musical presentations on campus, student recitals, assembly programs, publicizing concerts, and sponsoring the attendance at concerts.  In April 1963 they were granted a charter for a college chapter from Sigma Alpha Iota Professional Fraternity for Women in Music and became the Delta Zeta Chapter with the following members: Ella Kate Allen, Judy Ann Allen, Donna Armstrong, Rita Boyd, Katherine Garrett, Donna Sue Hodgings, Bobbie McInnish, Sherry Morgan, Stella Pickard, Patty Powell, Judith Pritchitt, Dixie Reynolds, Martha Smith, Rachael Stephans, Gilda Watson, Mary Morrow, Jean Barr (Adviser), and Olivia Rainer (Adviser).
