Dear Alabama Academy of Science Member or Friend,

On the behalf of the Troy University Local Arrangements Committee for the 2006 Alabama Academy of Science (AAS), I wish to welcome you to Troy University, the host institution for the 83rd Annual Meeting. Troy University, the College of Arts and Sciences, and our contributing colleges hope your visit with us will be pleasant and productive. Our meeting is held jointly with the Alabama Junior Academy of Science and the Scholarship Committee.

As in past meetings, oral and poster presentations will take place on Thursday and Friday. There will be a social Thursday night at the Pioneer Museum. We will have a banquet on Friday night at the Grand Ballroom of the Trojan Center or student center. Marriot is catering this affair, and after a fine meal, there will be our awards presentation and a lecture. Dr. Mike Stewart, Professor and ALFA Chair of Environmental Management and Agriculture will speak to us on sustainability.  Dr. Stewart’s topic is a natural follow up to the Friday symposium dedicated to the theme of Environmental Canaries. This event will be held in the Claudia Crosby Theatre across the street from the meeting sessions in the Math and Science Complex.

Troy University is a quite lovely setting. The newly landscaped central campus quad south of the meeting area is a tree bordered, open space affording easy movement from one campus center to another. Schackelford Quad on the other side of our meeting building sports a spectacular grove of large magnolia trees. A bronze of Rodin’s Thinker guards the entrance to the residential buildings around the magnolias.

The University is located in the center of the wiregrass. Forestry is the dominant agriculture, but cotton, peanuts, and other crops are active parts of our commerce. Livestock is important too, and there are several livestock auction sites in the neighborhood. The north part of campus boasts a scenic walking path and borders Elm Street. This highway runs to our downtown area where our government oversees a vital residential, academic, and industrial community.

We honestly want you to feel welcome here.Troy will be in session during our meeting, and we hope you get to know our general faculty, staff, andstudents.

Sincerely,
Kenneth R. Sundberg, Chair
Local Arrangements Committee
