| Thank you for your interest in the Geomatics Program at Troy University.
Troy University is an excellent choice to meet your educational objectives.
It is small enough to provide the personal attention you deserve in
one-on-one student advising and small class sizes, but big enough
to provide the facilities and advanced technical equipment necessary
to understand the fundamental concepts of your chosen profession. |

Our Program has been described as a ‘practical’
program with a focus. Our objective is to provide you the knowledge,
communications skills, and ability to successfully pursue a career
as a geomatics professional. The Program began in 1998, and produced
its first graduates in May 2000. One of the benefits of a new program
is the opportunity to shape the curriculum to meet the current demands
of the profession. The program is guided by an Advisory Board of recognized
professionals in the field. The distinguished faculty are able to
explain the latest theory in the field, and have a basis in practical
work experience to share with students.
The general program of study for a four-year degree in geomatics is
enclosed. This program of study can be adjusted to meet your specific
needs and interests in the field of geomatics. The core courses in
the major provide a study of the several sub disciplines in Geomatics:
land surveying, land development, photogrammetry, remote sensing,
geodesy, and geographic information systems (GIS). The eighteen semester
hour minor provides the opportunity to prepare for a specific job
opportunity after graduation, business ownership, or graduate school.
Excellent student advising is available to you to help you make these
choices. |

Our program has the active support of the Alabama Society of
Professional Land Surveyors. Students can apply for the scholarships
provided by ASPLS and find that the Society provides for their attendance
at ASPLS conventions and conferences at no cost. Join the growing
Geomatics Program at Troy University. Contact Dr. Steve Ramroop,

to discuss how the Geomatics Program can meet your individual needs
and career objectives.
Welcome to the Geomatics Program at Troy University. The goal of
the Program is to provide a high-quality program of study
in the sub disciplines of geomatics including classical survey fundamentals,
land surveying, land development, photogrammetry and remote sensing,
geodesy and GPS, least squares adjustment, and geographic information
systems (GIS).

To implement this goal, the program has
several objectives:
- Provide students the opportunity to prepare themselves to successfully
pass the Fundamentals of Surveying Licensing Exam. The program
is recognized by the Alabama Engineers and Land Surveyors Board.
This board is tasked with the responsibility of setting rules
and procedures for implementing the law concerning the licensure
and the practice of Professional Land Surveyors in Alabama.
- Provide each student the opportunity to learn and apply the
fundamental theory behind the practice of each sub discipline
of geomatics. You benefit by being capable of developing a solid
geomatics career upon graduation, and by being able to understand
and incorporate future technological advances into your practice.
We recognize the high probability of rapid technological innovation
and development in geomatics hardware, software, and practice.
- Provide each student with opportunity to gain experience developing
and presenting proposals and design projects. We recognize that
a graduate’s effectiveness in the workplace is directly
related to his/her communications skills.
- Provide each student the opportunity to broaden their backgrounds
with a wide range of general studies courses designed to help
graduates understand and work effectively with others in the workplace.

Student study of geomatics theory and applications takes place through
a series of core classes. The Geomatics Program Coordinator will work
with each student to assist in adapting the program to meet each student’s
individual needs.
Each student is encouraged to gain a minimum of two summer’s
work experience in his or her sub discipline of geomatics before graduation.
The benefit to you is the opportunity to gain valuable work experience;
work with future colleagues; and to personally experience working
in your career field. Work experience before graduation may provide
a higher paying job because employers may reward you for being able
to produce product immediately upon hire. |
