The Leadership Conference Celebrating African-American History Month, held annually at Troy University, provides to community leaders, area residents, and university students valuable information to enhance the quality of leadership and civic participation within their communities. This conference is coordinated and sponsored by the City of Troy and Troy University. Major Sponsors of the conference since its conception have been Reverend S. D. James and Wal-Mart.

During the conference, keynote addresses, individual presentations, and a notebook containing helpful handouts and resources provide information on various timely and important topics. Additionally, an individual or a group receives an award in recognition of community achievement each year. Conference themes have included "Empowered and Enlightened and Effective Leadership," "Building Strong Families and Communities," "Leadership: Accepting the Charge," "Leadership: Learning from the Past," and "Celebrating Community Leadership: Religious, Civic, Fraternal, and Social Organizations." Excellent keynote addresses have been delivered by Reverend Michael Thurman, Past of the Dextor Avenue King Memorial Church, Montgomery, Alabama; Patricia Russell McCloud, professional speaker and author; Thomas M. Todd, civil rights attorney and public speaker; Representative Lois M. DeBerry, Speaker Pro Tempore for the Tennessee House of Representatives; Reverend Jamal Bryant, Pastor of Empowerment Temple in Baltimore, Maryland, and, most recently, Reverend Joseph Lowrey, past President and founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Comission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
